1999 is when Minh Le and Jess Cliffe released Counter-Strike 1.0. I think it was a beta and ever since then, this game has had me hooked. I just can’t get enough of the team play and coordination that goes into match plays and the fun hours I get from pubin’ ( playing in public servers ). I know there are people out there that wake up on Friday morning, go to work, get home and power up their systems and for the rest of the weekend, its CS, hotpockets, and soda pop. I can’t imagine how their personal life, much compared to their physical appearance looks like. I hope they break away from their addiction.
Me on the other hand…I don’t think I have an addiction to the game, but I do love to kill time on it. Michele recently posted about having a “routine” when it comes to getting on your computer. I think my routine would be something along the lines of getting on, checking if anyone on Miranda has IM’d me, loading up my mail program, getting Firefox up, and checking my gMail, then checking my updated feeds. After a few mintues of reading, I’ll retire to a few mintues of gaming, and if I have nothing on my plate for the night or if I just have an hour or more to kill, I’ll keep playing Counter-Strike because I enjoy it, but not because I am addicted.
As for being disconnected, I am alot, but its just hard to notice. Weekends, I go out with Hiromi, and I do things that don’t require an internet connection nor a computer. Also during the week, if I don’t plan on staying home for the evening, I’ll give up my interneting for anything that deals with my friends. I don’t know it, but I practice being “disconnected” regularly and I think thats healthy enough. Being a Marine, its hard to get into horrible shape anyway, but even if I wasn’t, I’m sure my self-esteem would be more then enough to motivate me to visit a local gym and to lace up my Nike AirMax 360 running shoes. Michele was away from the internet for 5 days and to her it proved to be a well cleansing situation. hmm…when I was in Iraq, I was without internet for quite a while, months. I think that makes up enough so that I don’t have to retreat for awhile ‘eh?

Usually, there is nothing cheaper for me to do other than get on the internet or play on my PSP or PS2. There are others things Kris and I do though, such as taking walks with the dog on campus (we have a really pretty campus), taking our chihuahua to the dog park on Saturdays, or watching a movie whether it be in the theatre or a rental. We also like to visit museums for free on Thursdays here in Houston. Hmm.
As far as “disconnecting”, well, it’s a bit hard for me to do that. I read the news every day as part of my personal conviction to be on top of my game as a social worker. It’s basically the same thing that you said about how it’s hard to be a Marine and not be fit. It’s hard to be a social worker without reading the news. Protecting and defending those in need is a 24-7 job just like being a soldier is also a 24-7 job.

I used to be addicted or as you say “enjoy to play”, but I lost the CD and it cured me… :0
