With all the new companies and businesses using the boom of Web 2.0 to their advantage, whats to say that certian corporations aren’t to benifit from it either? Like say, the Marine Corps? The Marine Corps has produced a recruiting tool out of MySpace with their profile at http://www.myspace.com/themarinecorps.
The website isn’t so much for recruiting because you still have to come talk to a recuriter to actully join up, but its there to spread interest and make it easier for people to contact a local recuriter. Its a pretty ingenius to actully get a foot into this large social networking medium. With 18,282 ‘friends’ its doing pretty good at spreading its popularity and with this, another Armed Service is looking into creating its own profile. The Army is said to be releasing its own MySpace profile in the near future.
I’ve read many blogs about this and how “MySpace was never meant for military use” but I disagree with this. Like many Marines, I could careless and would always side with the non-military side of myself but this time I changed my thought. Whats wrong with finding a new form of advertising? Just because they are taking advantage of something like this doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be allowed to. If your one of those people who think that the government should keep out of this, you’ll have to realize that democracy doesn’t live here on the internet. The military can, and will do it.
