It’s so damn hot… milk was a bad choice.
-Ron Burgundy, the Anchorman; Will Ferrell
Although chocolate milk was the diary product I choose to consume as apposed to milk, it was still damn hot outside. Okinawa’s temperatures don’t really drop until sometime near the end of October and even then, a simple walk to the chow hall and barracks and then back can be a very sweaty experience, especially when the humidity of this tropical island is around 200% or wet-air. Yes, life was good because up until now, I wasn’t going out to do any field operations involving no showers, no a/c, and no shelter from the heat. Thank goodness I didn’t drown in my own seat while walking to work or else I’da never heard the good news of me going on for the next six days. Yippee!
Well shit. Now, for 6 days and 5 nights, I get to not shower. I can sweat till it looks like I got rained on. I can drink all the distilled water I want, and sometimes get forced to drink it because other Marines are passing out due to heat exhaustion. I get to take a few classes that I’ll probably won’t remember because the sweat burning my eyes will be too much for my brain to overcome and actually understand what I’m being told. The list goes on people, and on. The field isn’t supposed to be this way, but that is the way it is here. This unit is amazing. It’s done some great things in the past and was even a highly recognized unit during the 2004 invasion of Iraq. Why can’t I see this now? I don’t understand. But hey, it’s cool. Just a FEW more months and I’m O U T!
It isn’t so much the fact that I’ll be hating life when I’m out there, but the fact that I can’t make moves within my life when I’m out there. I was suppose to get some important documents from Hiromi this weekend and finalize my marriage packet. This will set me back a few days from our planned date so I’m going to have to pull some serious strings to get it done before we ship out. If I don’t get my personal mission accomplished, I’m going to be one pissed off Marine. Wish me luck!
