So let’s talk about the iPhone and Apple for a bit since Google is dishing out at least 60,900,000 returns for the term and Technorati is spitting out around 100,000 posts on the term. Also, I’m starting to notice things are getting a bit ridiculous (Hat tip:Richie ). I should hope my response isn’t alarming or a surprise.
I understand why there is so much hype and I congratulate Apple on being able to throw the entire world into a feeding frenzy for a device that is similar to other products already out on the market. Like a hand full of other people who enjoy tech toys but aren’t thrown into zombie mode by a logo and light show, I am waiting for two things, the “real” user reviews and the price tag.
You can’t review a movie you haven’t seen. No, makes no sense. It’s like saying some kind of food is good before you try it. Yet all over the net there are claims of iPhone reviews of people who haven’t even touched one. And what is even funnier is that they are giving a product that they haven’t owned for a day great reviews like it some sort of magical item they’ve never heard about. I’m guessing, and its just a guess, that the very same people that “OH” and “AHH” at the text messaging, web browsing, sensing screen and conference call never owned or seen a BlackBerry. But, like I said, I’m waiting patiently and I am trying to step around the people setting up camp in front of Apple stores waiting for the product’s release.
Another surprise that I am awaiting to be revealed is the price. Of course the rumor around the world is $300-$600 $499 to $599 dollars. I personally hope its somewhere around $1000. Why? Remember when the iPod hit the streets and it was around $300 and people were getting robbed for their iPod in the streets of New York and California? They said to themselves, “Wow, I just lost my $300 iPod.” I want to read about people saying “Dang, I just lost my $1000 iPhone.” Now I’m not saying I hope you get robbed for your iPhone, but well,it’s just like a kid waiting to hear if his school is closed due to a snow storm. Another funny fact is that people will pay that much for it. It’s all about how Apple markets its iPhone. When I think of Apple, I think of Anpanman here in Japan. Anpanman is a kid super hero here in Japan. Along with his TV show, games, toys, and laundry list of apparel, he also sold his name to many knick knacks which are double and sometimes triple that of regular name brands. Here is one case study:
Here at a store, I found two similar umbrellas. I even opened them to make sure they were the same and the design was pretty much the same except one difference. The graphic on the rain cover. The regular one with the plain graphic was priced at around $3.98 in USD. Now how much do you think the graphic Anpanman is worth? Double the price? Triple? No….quad it up baby! The Anpanman was priced at around $16.45 USD. Despite them being the same overall size and color and material, they get to charge FOUR times the normal price. Same goes for any other big market business items. And people will still pay for that because of its influence. Now try to imagine if the business said that the Anpanman umbrella reinvented the way we use umbrellas. How much more could they charge?
So enough with the reviews unless you owned one for more then a day, and enough of the gaga over something that has technology thats been out for years. Save it for when it does come out. Save it for when you do own one. And to answer your question, yes, I am WAITING to get one too.
Correction: Expected price of the iPhone ranges from $499 to $599, just a mear $400 shy of my dream price. Thanks RandyW!

I’m so glad I don’t keep up w/ all that mess. Yeah, I own an iPod. I can’t say I don’t own it for the name cuz yeah I like being able to say “I own a 30 gig iPod” but I like the space. I can back up all my music and take it where ever I freakin go. As far as this iPhone goes. I’ve read about it. Not looking into getting one. Maybe one day I’ll check it out but I have better things to spend $ on. (Like my lawyer.)

I have a T-Mobile MDA that I loved until I saw the iPhone.
It has a touch screen that allows me to dial, just like the iPhone.
It has an address book that allows me to make a call by touching that person’s contact number, just like the iPhone.
It has a *removable* memory card that allows me to store mp3s, pictures (to be used as wallpapers), which is kind of like the iPhone except that it costs $25 on amazon.com for a ONE gb card *on sale*.
When I bought it less than a year ago, it cost $400 + memory card + a two year contract which is more than the iPhone since I’ve read that the iPhone price *includes* the two-year contract, but close enough.
There are some things it can’t do… like let me visualize album art work, play songs from iTunes, view my voice mail and select which ones I want to listen to, etc. but that’s not a HUGE deal.
What IS a huge deal is that my MDA won’t sync to my iMac without buying buggy third party software. I HATE THAT!
I would gladly pay $499 for an iPhone that does everything my MDA does *and* has more features if I can just plug it into my iMac and sync up…
my Address Book (which has four or five times the contacts in my MDA because typing all that crap out is a pain in the ass on a tiny little keyboard),
iCal (which I heavily rely on since my husband has a weird work schedule and again, having to retype everything on a tiny little keyboard just isn’t going to happen),
iPhoto (since I LOVE LOVE LOVE mobile phone pictures and I have to use Email to get them from my MDA to my iMac, which can be a pain depending on how many pictures I’ve taken that day… and I take a lot!),
my iTunes library (not having to convert them to mp3 would be dreamy!),
etc. etc. etc.
So, while I still have a contract with T-Mobile, I’m not going to be one of the first kids on my block to have a fancy new iPhone, but as soon as that contract expires or Steve Jobs gets a clue and allows other carriers to have the iPhone, I’ll gladly shell out the cash so that I can sync. Windows users don’t have this problem so I can see why it might not be a big deal but Mac users don’t have that luxury… until now.
And I don’t think theft will be an issue… or at least not like how it was with the iPod… since there won’t be a way to use the phone/data services once the victim cancels their account with Cingular. Cingular also won’t allow an account to be created on a stolen phone.

Just a question, why didn’t you go with the BlackBerry if you wanted to sync contacts and etc from a Mac?
I remember being in Austin and there was this guy demonstrating how his BlackBerry had sync capabilities with his Mac. The software was called Pocket Mac. It sync’d “…Entourage, Address Book, iCal, Now Contact, Now Up-To-Date, and even Stickies.” I’m reading this off their website and I’m also seeing support of the MDA.
BlackBerry has been in the PDA world for years and their products offer day to day users the sufficient amount of flexibility to get the job done. The only thing really missing is the touch screen and a music player, but don’t we all own iPods?
Now, in no way am I saying the iPhone sucks but it just didn’t live up to my expectation and of those us who know what technology has been out already. Reinvented the phone? No…I think not.
Now my friend brought up a good point about how when iPods came out they were around $399 so if you look at it from a consumer’s point of view, the extra hundred is for the phone and PDAness of the iPhone. So now I have to eat my words on the price deal. Fuck.
But just like the iPod, I’m going to wait until the price goes down because I’m too resourceful for that price tag.

I’ve heard not-so-great things about both Pocket Mac and The Missing Sync, both buggy third party apps, which is why I’ve put off buying one. They’re both $40, btw… so add that to the cost of the phone, the memory card, and the service plan. I would have saved money if Apple would have just come out with the iPhone LAST YEAR. Dammit Steve!
PS. I picked the MDA over the Blackberry because I think the MDA has a better keyboard.

If I wanted that option, I’d take it. Back then, its worth a try. $40 or how much ever time it took for the iPhone release.
When it comes to news and info on Mac software and hardware, I go to MacWorld. Didn’t they give good reviews to the Pocket Mac?
I also think the MDA’s keyboard is a bit better, but I’d choose the BB.
