How much trust do you put into your external hard drive(s)? Are all your photos, music and movies on it? If it crashed, how devastated would you be? This being so, how many do you own and have back up of back ups? What manufacturer do you trust?
I’ve owned two external hard drives in my entire computer working lifetime. My first one, jeez, I can’t remember when or what type it was. All I know it was about 100 GB and externals were a brand new thing. If I remember correctly, I think it was a Maxtor. I can’t really tell you what happen to it but I know I upgraded and I have had that 300 GB Maxtor for about 5 years now. It is near full and I really need to replace it quickly.
The 300 GB contains everything. It is my sole back-up drive. If I were to lose it…wow. I don’t even want to fathom what I would do. My trust is soley in the hands of my 5 year-old, dust-collecting, always running, filled to the brim, 300 GB Maxtor external hard drive. But I trust it.

What I don’t trust is my NEW, impulse buy. A Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential 2.0. I bought it because I needed an external to transfer files which I needed while here in Korea. I had to purchase it quickly because I had to completely reogranize my deployed laptop’s system. Now, it runs Linux along with Windows XP. I purchased this cheap for around $100 but I felt this was a waste once I got home and read the reviews on Amazon. This is version 2.0 of the hard drive and it has 14 negative reviews claiming it died after about a year. I’m scared. Thinking about this one crashing makes my hair on my neck stand up because I think about my one at home. How much life does it have?
I am returning home for my son’s FIRST birthday. I will be home for a short time, but in this time, I plan on purchasing a moster of a external. I’ll probably order a Cavalry 1 TB external since it seems to be one of the better externals on the market; but that will be later. For the time being, I’ll have to settle with what the PX/BX have on base and I know for sure they have the LaCie and Seagate FreeAgent Pro series there. Hopefully I do this in time.
